Ms. Sam.â Jayâs eyes widened. He straightened up in haste.
âAlejandro.â Anna stepped inside fully, assessing his shaky demeanour with a clinical eye. âMy little birds told me you were on the lot, but no one thought to mention what shape youâre in. Sit, please.â
Nicky shifted where he stood next to the sofa. âMs. Sam.â
âMr. Lo. You seem in good health.â
Lola placed herself in front of Kane.
Anna cocked her head slightly. âAnd you must be Butch Starkeâs daughter.â She scanned Lola from hair to shoes and back again. âYou have your motherâs face and your fatherâs height.â She offered a polite smile. âA pleasure under other circumstances.â
The crunch of footsteps on the gravel outside pre-empted Lolaâs reply.
âNathaniel? Are you in there? Nathaniel?â A womanâs voice, clear and strident. The woman herself clattered through the doorway and stopped abruptly. Her delicate oval face was balanced by a small, upturned nose and light brown eyes, and framed by black hair cut artfully to her jawline. Her yellow linen dress was creased, her matching low-heeled shoes dusty.
âEloise.â Anna took a small step away. âHeâs not here.â
Eloiseâs eyes bulged for a moment. âWhat are you doing here, Anna?â She surveyed the room. âMr. Lo? Why are youâ? Whatâs going on? Whereâs Nathaniel? And Lewis Kane? Is he all right?â
Lola felt Kane stand up behind her. She turned, met his glare. She obliged him, stepping away toward the window. He turned his scowl on Anna and Eloise. âWhat in the eighteen hells gives you the right to manipulate my life like this?â
Eloise bowed, her face mask-like. âMr. Kane. Iâm truly so sorry for the drastic measures.â She flicked a glance at Anna, beside her. âIâd only meant to delay your work. Nathaniel had instructions to treat you with the utmost care and consideration. He assured me you were fine.â
âDrastic measures, she calls them.â Kaneâs scowl deepened. âIs that the euphemism for kidnapping these days?â He pointed. âYou had Tsoh trick me into coming here, worrying my wifeââ His shoulders sagged, his face twisting with pain. âWhy arenât you doing anything to get my wife back?â
Eloise blinked rapidly several times. âIâ¦Iâm afraid I donât know what youâre talking about.â She looked from him to Anna to Nicky. âWhatâs this about? Whereâs Nathaniel?â
Lola watched Anna, wondering if she would explain the situation to her rival. Behind Anna, Jay stood, haggard and tense.
Annaâs face was unreadable, her gaze on Kane.
Kane stared at Eloise, his expression stony.
Aubrey muttered, âGods, what a hash.â
Lola said, âMrs. Kane has been kidnapped by Carmen Hsieh, held hostage to force Mr. Kane to render a positive report for this acquisition of Studio Eight.â
Eloise gasped sharply, her eyes filling with tears. âMy gods, Iâm so terribly, horribly, sorry. I had no idea. Iââ She gulped. âIâve been so myopicâ¦â She closed her eyes for a moment, swiped at the wetness on her cheeks. âI never dreamed my plan would harm anyone.â She covered her mouth with the back of a hand, eyes going wide. She swallowed several times and dropped her hand.
